Iceland Ice Cave Guide (a provisional working name) is an independent, English-language information site about ice caves and glacier tours in Iceland. It is not run by, or affiliated with, any tour operator, booking platform, Vatnajökull National Park, Safetravel/ICE-SAR or any government body.
How we research
- Every factual claim is cited. The numbered links go to the page or document we actually opened. Each one shows the publisher and the date we accessed it. If a page could only be partly read (for example a JavaScript-rendered news page where we saw only the headline), the source list says so.
- Source priority:
- official Icelandic bodies (Vatnajökull National Park / Náttúruverndarstofnun, Icelandic Met Office, Safetravel/ICE-SAR, Ferðamálastofa, Ísland.is);
- news media (RÚV, mbl.is, Heimildin, Iceland Review, BBC);
- tour operators' own pages, labelled Operator claim.
- Icelandic-language sources are used and translated by us. Where the original wording matters, we quote it.
- Draft documents (such as the park's 2025–2027 contract terms, marked "drög") are labelled as drafts.
- What we leave out: anything we could not verify from a fetched source. That includes prices, seasons and safety claims. Items we couldn't verify are listed in the project's research notes, not presented as fact.
- Dates: pages show when they were published and when the facts were checked. Glacier conditions change daily, so the operator's and the authorities' current information always overrides ours.
What we don't do
- We don't say a cave is "safe" or "open" on a given day. Nobody outside the daily assessment can.
- We don't give safety advice beyond what an official source says. See the safety page.
- We don't accept payment for coverage. See the affiliate disclosure.
Corrections
If something is wrong or out of date, we want to fix it. A contact address will be added before launch. None has been set up yet.
