Ice cave and glacier safety: start with the official sources

This site is not a safety authority. It points you to the people who are, and quotes only what they say.

Official sources to check before and during your trip

Safetravel's old /ice-caves/ and /glaciers/ pages returned "Page not found" when we checked on 2026-10-23, so we link to the alerts and travel plan pages instead [2].

Hazards the official documents name

  • Collapse, mostly around cave mouths. Other hazards: water flow and sudden outbursts of stored water, moulins with slush flows, and falls on slippery ice. All are listed in the park's 2024 draft report, which draws on the 2017 risk assessment [11].
  • Season: melt is the main driver of risk. In winter, warm spells, rain and wind still add risk [11]. The Met Office and University of Iceland memo (2024) says ice cave tours should run only in winter, and only when there has been no warm spell or flooding [12].
  • Glacial floods and volcanic gas at Kötlujökull (Katla): covered by the same memo [12] and the August 2026 Múlakvísl gas reports [13]. See the Katla page.
  • Retreating glacier edges: lagoons, quicksand near the margins, unstable slopes and rockfall. Paved roads lead almost to some glacier tongues, so inexperienced travellers can easily get into hazardous situations [9].
  • Overhanging ice: after the August 2024 collapse, the park said that at that time of year, all formations with a roof, overhang or arch are extremely dangerous [14].

Guides, rules and who decides

  • Inside Vatnajökull National Park:
    • commercial tours need a contract with the park [15];
    • under the draft 2025–2027 terms, a daily morning assessment decides which caves may be visited that day [16];
    • operators still carry full responsibility for their guests' safety [16].
  • Outside the park (for example Kötlujökull):
    • RÚV reported that no specific rules apply to ice cave tours [17];
    • Iceland Review reported that companies submit safety plans to the Tourist Board but judge conditions themselves [18].
  • Going without a guide: not banned on the glacier, but strongly warned against, including with warning signs at glacier tongues [11]. Visit Vatnajökull says ice caves should never be entered without a glacier guide and safety gear [19].

The 2024 fatal collapse

On 25 August 2024, an ice wall collapsed during a guided tour at Breiðamerkurjökull. An American man died and his partner was injured [20] [21]. Full sourced account: Breiðamerkurjökull page.

FAQ

Do I need a guide to visit an ice cave in Iceland?

Visit Vatnajökull, the regional tourism site, says ice caves should never be entered without a glacier guide and safety gear [19]. Inside Vatnajökull National Park, commercial tours need a park contract, and lead guides must hold at least Jökla 3 [15]. The park's 2024 draft report says going onto the glacier on your own is not banned but is strongly warned against [11].

What number do I call in an emergency?

112 [1].
