Ice Caves in Iceland by Month: What's Actually Open (and Safe) in 2026
Month-by-month table of Iceland's main ice cave and glacier tour areas (Breiðamerkurjökull, Katla/Kötlujökull, the Langjökull ice tunnel, Sólheimajökull), using official rules, scientists' warnings and operators' own season claims, each sourced and dated.

Short answer: natural ice caves in Vatnajökull National Park (Breiðamerkurjökull) are a winter activity. The park's draft 2025–2027 contract terms allow traditional ice cave tours only 1 October – 30 April [1]. Two kinds of tour run outside that window: the man-made ice tunnel in Langjökull, which its operator calls year-round [2], and the Katla (Kötlujökull) ice cave, which operators sell all year [3] [4] even though scientists warn against summer ice cave tours [5].
The year at a glance
- In season (official or operator)
- Shoulder / uncertain / sources disagree
- Not permitted, or scientists warn against
Colours summarise the table below, one cell per month. Tap a month to jump to its row; every cell there links to its source. Conditions are assessed daily, so a green month is not a promise.
Month-by-month table
How to read it: each cell says what the cited source says for that month. Green means the month falls inside an official or operator season. Amber means it is a shoulder month, sources disagree, or the status is uncertain. Red means traditional tours are not permitted, or scientists explicitly warn against them. Operator claim cells come from tour companies' own marketing. The draft contract terms are marked Draft document because we have not seen the final signed version.

Sólheimajökull is amber all year because, after the July 2026 hazard notice from the Icelandic Met Office (IMO), we could not confirm which routes operators are currently using Unverified. Check Safetravel's Sólheimajökull page before you book [18].
Why sources give different seasons for Breiðamerkurjökull
- Park rules, draft 2025–2027 contract terms Draft document: traditional ice cave tours are permitted 1 October – 30 April [1]. The contracts themselves run from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2027 [19].
- Science: according to the park's 2024 draft report, the low-melt, lowest-risk period can last up to 8–9 months. It most commonly runs about 6 months (early November to the end of April) and can shrink to 4 months (December–March) in very warm winters [10].
- Expert group proposal (March 2025): end the season in mid-April and resume in mid-October. Some members proposed a 1 May – 1 October off-season [11]. This was a proposal; the draft terms above are the later document.
- Regional tourism site (dated page): "from November and usually throughout March, depending on the weather" [20]. Its FAQ says mid-November to mid-March [21].
- Operator Operator claim: Glacier Mice lists its season as October–April [12].
Our reading: October and April are shoulder months. Tours may be permitted then, but conditions are more likely to rule out particular caves. We have no source on how often tours were actually cancelled in those months, so we don't estimate it.
How busy each month was (2023–24)
Vatnajökull National Park's 2024 draft report counted about 286,806 guests on ice cave and glacier walk tours in the southern part of the park from September 2023 to August 2024 [10]. The report's monthly totals:
| Month | All tours | Of which under ice ("undir ís") |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 2023 | 36,070 | 30,755 |
| Nov 2023 | 25,506 | 23,432 |
| Dec 2023 | 23,473 | 21,440 |
| Jan 2024 | 19,039 | 17,649 |
| Feb 2024 | 36,153 | 33,040 |
| Mar 2024 | 46,902 | 43,004 |
| Apr 2024 | 18,321 | 15,254 |
| May 2024 | 9,069 | 1,834 |
| Jun 2024 | 13,673 | 1,836 |
| Jul 2024 | 20,982 | 5,190 |
| Aug 2024 | 17,710 | 4,939 |
| Sep 2023 | 19,908 | 6,692 |
The figures come from a draft (DRÖG) document, and the column label is translated from Icelandic. They describe the year before the summer ban and the 2025 rule changes, so they don't show current demand.
Katla in summer: what operators say vs. what scientists say
Operators advertise the Katla ice cave as open all year Operator claim. Arctic Adventures calls it "Iceland's only year-round natural ice cave" and says it can close at short notice because of weather, glacier movement or volcanic activity [4]. In September 2024, the Icelandic Met Office and the University of Iceland's glaciology group wrote that the 2017 risk assessment found summer ice cave tours dangerous. They said tours should run only in winter, and only when there has been no warm spell or flooding. This applies to all Icelandic glaciers, with a special warning for Kötlujökull because of glacial floods (jökulhlaups) [5]. In 2025, glaciologist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson said: "It is absolutely unacceptable that there are ice cave tours in an area like Kötlujökull in the summer" [17]. Kötlujökull is outside Vatnajökull National Park, and RÚV reported that no specific rules apply to ice cave tours there [22] [17]. Details: Katla page.
What this page does not tell you
- Which individual caves are open this week: caves form and collapse every season, and assessments are made day by day [1].
- Whether the 2025–2027 contract terms were signed exactly as drafted. We have only seen the draft Unverified.
- Exact 2026–27 prices and availability. Prices on our cave pages are operator quotes with the date we checked them.
FAQ
Can I visit a natural ice cave in Vatnajökull National Park in summer?
Not on a traditional ice cave tour. The park's draft contract terms for 2025–2027 allow traditional ice cave tours only from 1 October to 30 April each year [1], and Iceland Review reported that caves close in summer and reopen in early October [24]. Operators such as Glacier Mice offer glacier hikes instead from May to September [12].
Is the Katla ice cave open all year?
Operators advertise it as year-round [3] [4]. Scientists from the Icelandic Met Office and the University of Iceland warn against ice cave tours in summer on all Icelandic glaciers, with a special warning for Kötlujökull [5].
Which ice cave month is safest?
No source we found names a single safe month, and conditions are assessed day by day. A 2024 draft report for Vatnajökull National Park says the low-melt, lowest-risk period is most commonly about early November to the end of April, can shrink to December–March in very warm winters, and that warm spells, rain and wind still bring risk in winter [10].
