Into the Glacier is a man-made ice tunnel high on Langjökull, Iceland's second-largest glacier. It is different from natural ice caves, which form at glacier edges. The operator says the tunnel is on "the most stable (and safest) part of the glacier" [1] [2]. All facts below come from the operator Operator claim.
Season and access
- The operator calls it the "World's only year-round ice tunnel" [2].
- The tunnel is at about 1,260 m above sea level and can only be reached in specially modified vehicles [1].
- Summer: the gravel road from Húsafell to Klaki Base Camp is open only 1 June – 15 October, depending on weather. The operator strongly recommends driving it only in a 4×4 and offers a shuttle from Húsafell [1].
- Winter (16 Oct – 31 May): use roads 1, 50 and 518 to Húsafell. Road 550 is closed from October until June [2].
- The glacier-vehicle ride takes about 30 minutes each way in summer and 75 minutes in winter [2]. Check road status on umferdin.is [3].
The tour
- The Classic Tour lasts 3–4 hours from Húsafell or Klaki and costs from 24,900 (in ISK, the site's default currency, on 2026-10-23) [4] [2].
- It is about 0°C inside all year [1].
- Crampons are provided [1].
- Expect a walk of about 500 m on snow and ice and roughly an hour on your feet [1].
- There is no age limit on the Classic Tour. The snowmobile tour has a minimum age of 8 [1].
- The operator may change or cancel tours for weather or road conditions [2].
