December is inside the permitted window for traditional ice cave tours in Vatnajökull National Park (1 October – 30 April, draft 2025–2027 contract terms) [1]. The park's 2024 draft report says the lowest-risk period most commonly runs from about early November to the end of April, and can shrink to December–March in very warm winters [2]. The same report says warm spells, rain and wind still bring risk in winter [2].
By area in December
- Breiðamerkurjökull (Vatnajökull National Park): inside the permitted window [1] and inside the season given by the regional tourism site (dated page) [3]. Rangers at Breiðamerkursandur are on duty every day of the year and are responsible for the ice caves [4].
- Katla (Kötlujökull): operators sell tours all year Operator claim [5] [6]. Arctic Adventures says its tour may close at short notice because of weather, glacier movement or volcanic activity [6].
- Into the Glacier (Langjökull): winter route via roads 1, 50 and 518 to Húsafell [7]. The operator also lists an "Into the glacier & Northern Lights" winter tour from Reykjavík, 13–15 hours Operator claim [8].
- Sólheimajökull: Glacier Hike and Ice Cave Exploration is listed for November–April, cave "when conditions allow" Operator claim [9]. Check Safetravel's Sólheimajökull page first [10].
How busy was December?
In December 2023 the park's draft report counted 23,473 guests on ice cave and glacier walk tours in the southern part of the park, of which 21,440 were under ice [2]. These figures are from before the 2025 rule changes. All months are in the month-by-month table.
Christmas and New Year
None of the operator pages we checked publish specific Christmas or New Year departure schedules, so we do not list any. Katla Track says departure times may change by season [5]. Confirm holiday dates directly with your operator.
What we could not verify
We have no citable source for December daylight hours or typical weather on this page. Before driving, check umferdin.is [11] and the Icelandic Met Office [12].
