November is inside the permitted window for traditional ice cave tours in Vatnajökull National Park, which runs 1 October – 30 April under the draft 2025–2027 contract terms [1]. The park's 2024 draft report says the low-melt, lowest-risk period most commonly starts in early November [2]. Conditions are still assessed day by day, so no month is a guarantee [1].

By area in November

  • Breiðamerkurjökull (Vatnajökull National Park): inside the permitted window [1]. The regional tourism site says caves are accessible "from November and usually throughout March, depending on the weather" (dated page) [3]; its FAQ says the season starts mid-November [4]. One operator, Glacier Mice, gives its ice cave season as October–April Operator claim [5].
  • Katla (Kötlujökull): operators sell tours all year Operator claim [6] [7]. Scientists from the Icelandic Met Office and University of Iceland say ice cave tours should only run in winter, and give a special warning for Kötlujökull because of glacial floods [8].
  • Into the Glacier (Langjökull): the summer road from Húsafell is open only 1 June – 15 October [9]. In November, the operator uses its winter route via roads 1, 50 and 518 to Húsafell [10].
  • Sólheimajökull: Icelandic Mountain Guides lists its Glacier Hike and Ice Cave Exploration tour for November–April, with the cave visited "when conditions allow" Operator claim [11]. Read the July 2026 hazard notice [12] and check Safetravel's Sólheimajökull page for the current status [13].

How busy was November?

The park's 2024 draft report counted 25,506 guests on ice cave and glacier walk tours in the southern part of the park in November 2023, of which 23,432 were on tours under ice [2]. That was before the 2025 rule changes, so it does not show current demand. See the month-by-month table for all months.

What we could not verify

We did not find an official source for November daylight hours or road conditions that we could cite on this page. Check road conditions on umferdin.is [14] and weather warnings from the Icelandic Met Office [15] before you drive.
