October is a shoulder month. Traditional ice cave tours in Vatnajökull National Park are permitted from 1 October under the draft 2025–2027 contract terms [1]. However, the park's 2024 draft report says the low-melt, lowest-risk period most commonly starts in early November [2].

By area in October

  • Breiðamerkurjökull: inside the permitted window from 1 October [1]. Iceland Review reported in 2025 that caves reopen in early October [3]. In October 2023, the park counted 36,070 ice cave and glacier walk guests [2]. In 2024, tours under ice were banned until 31 October after the August collapse [4].
  • Katla (Kötlujökull): operators run tours all year Operator claim [5]. Iceland Review summarises the 2017 risk assessment as finding caves unsafe from May to October [6].
  • Into the Glacier (Langjökull): the Húsafell–Klaki road is open until 15 October [7]. From 16 October, use the winter route (roads 1, 50 and 518), because road 550 is closed from October [8].
  • Sólheimajökull: kayaking runs until October Operator claim [9]. Read the July 2026 hazard notice [10] and check Safetravel's Sólheimajökull page for the current status [11].

Check Safetravel alerts before you travel [12], and see Vatnajökull National Park for official park information [13]. More on official sources is on our safety page.
